French Property Exhibitions
I even went to an exhibition on Buying Property in France at the National Hall Kensington Olympia, London. Good stuff, Lots of literature, stands with Property Agents willing to chat, like minded people talking of their experiences, the do’s and don’ts, things to avoid and to acquire before the quest to spend and acquire your dream home… I recommend going to one of these and French Property Exhibitions are now available in many large cities across the UK.
Try to get buy in with your partner
During this time I continued to try and persuade my wife that it was a good idea to buy property abroad and maybe even move the family. We should move to France I suggested, put the kids into a French school and they would eventually benefit by being bi-lingual. I could ditch my job running a Gite or three with money In the bank or keep my job, commute from France which was a possibility with the cheap flights provided by companies such as Easyjet, Ryanair and Flybe. I even provided routes, times and costing. She initially warmed to the idea but as time went on could see that I meant what I saying and really wanted to do it. The thought of making such a big decision, taking the kids out of school and breaking ties really scared her. My wife is a home girl and has no thoughts of risk or adventure, she cooled to the idea and became unapproachable and showed no interest to even discuss the matter.
BUT
Well, you like to seek the approval and have backing from the one you love. It’s far easier to work together than to work against each other but as always I am the determined type. I wanted to at least invest, I knew we would benefit financially. After all my efforts of patient persuasion I thought well I’ll do it anyway.
Well after a year of trying to raise some interest from my wife and using all my best methods of persuasion she eventually agreed to the idea of buying a property to let and use as a holiday home. It was the better of 2 evils in her eyes I think. She agreed to re-mortgage the house and use the equity to invest and buy Property in France. I initially looked to pull at least £100,000 but could only get buy in from the wife for £30,000 for all my efforts. Well things were tense and the compromise was uneasy so I thought that will have to do. I’d see what could be done and not being deterred I would buy a property, plant my flag so to speak and if needs be renovate to get what I wanted.
