    Laying the Dining Room Floor

October arrived and I was again in France. I had begged borrowed and stole to raise the funds required to complete the roof. I had also raised enough to pay for the floor tiles for the dining room and would begin this project before the Materials and Phil arrived on site. Phil was not due to arrive until a few days into my stay. The floor looked fairly even and I had laid floor tiles before so felt confident that the end result would be good. I started from an exterior wall and worked back towards the hallway. I had all the materials including spacers and adhesive. I worked for about 6 hours and had made excellent progress I thought. I even got a little cocky and created channels into my tiling so that I could reach all areas to grout and cleanup.

I returned the next day to tile the channels before starting again off on a straight edge but found that gaps began to appear even though id used spacers with every tile. These gaps grew larger as I retreated up the channels.

LESSON LEARNT – I have discussed this with a tiling friend of mine and he said NEVER build channels always work from a start line and move back with it.

Anyway the spacers were discarded for a large part of the remaining floor and I just about managed to get away with it. People on seeing the floor do not notice the ever increasing gaps at certain points and I kind of thought on completion that perfection was boring anyway. ‘A feature and adds character’ as I say when a job is not quite right.
